Updates to Scoutcraft Merit Badges

We are lucky to have recruited Larry Green to serve as the Scoutcraft Director at Barstow this summer.  This is a once in a lifetime chance to learn from the guy that literally wrote the Pioneering merit badge book and the syllabus for Outdoor Skills Training at National Camp School.  He has spent countless hours creating detailed lesson plans for Pathfinders, Outdoorsman, and Ranger.  If you have any Scouts taking these bundles please review the updated information in the Leader’s Guide.  Some of the things he has added include gear that the Scouts must bring and other important items to be able to get a completion.

Precamp Zoom With the Camp Leadership

We want to make sure your troop is prepared to come to Barstow this summer (hey it’s the Scout motto!).  So our leadership team is scheduling a pair of precamp Zoom calls to go over the important information you need to know prior to camp and answer questions.  On this call from the camp side will be the Camp Director, Program Director and Commissioner.  We have scheduled this zoom during our staff week with a make up session later in the week if you are unable to catch the first go around.  We are planning to spend about an hour going through a checklist of items and making sure you are 100% ready to go. THIS IS NOT a format that you should invite your troop parents to take part in.  After digesting the information you are welcome to disseminate what’s necessary with your Scout parents but they don’t need to be in on how the sausage is made.

COVID Safety Protocol Updates

We are very blessed this year to welcome a husband and wife team of retired nurses to assist us at camp.  Rick and Jeannie Borne have spent hours pouring over research and crafting our COVID safety protocols.  We ask that you take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the document linked below.

Barstow Leader Guide Health & Safety May 2020 Update

In addition as a practical matter there are some adjustments to how camp is going to be run that are worth pointing out here.

We ask that everyone eligible to get vaccinated prior to camp. We are not requiring a COVID test or completed vaccination to attend.

Anyone coming to camp will need to be pre-screened (form and explanation in this email update) before leaving the parking lot.

In the dining hall we will serve everyone in one seating using a cafeteria style dining model.  We will still assign troop tables so that you can sit with your Scouts 3x per day and check in.

The dining hall will operate at 60% capacity.  Because we are very booked during weeks 1 and 2 to allow for social distancing some guests will eat outside at tables under the pavilion.  During those packed weeks the camp will be divided into three groups and one meal out of each day your group (colored wristbands) will eat outside under the pavilion.

Visitors are not invited to come Friday night for the campfire and OA call out ceremony.

Mandatory Health Screening Form

Everyone is pretty familiar nowadays with the concept of a health screening form.  Ours has been developed by our medical officer to help establish the first layer of defense against any sickness entering camp.  Upon arrival on Sunday EVERYONE must have a completed form ready to hand in and submit to a temperature check before beginning the standard check-in procedures.  Print out a copy of this form for every person in your party and have it ready to hand in when you exit the vehicle upon arrival.

BSA Rules on Golf Carts, ATVs

Recently the BSA created very strict rules for use of any golf cart or ATV on camp property.  These guidelines essentially will prohibit any troop leader from bringing any type of similiar vehicle to camp.  You are welcome to reach out to our Ranger William McCormick if you have questions about the new policy.

Troop Campsite Assignments

During the registration process you will have noticed that you were only asked your preference for a campsite assignment.  This is because we have to balance the assignments to accommodate small, medium and large troops the best way possible.  It can become quite a puzzle!  During the upcoming June 4-6 staff weekend the leadership team will finalize those assignments and post them publicly the following week.  We will also share them in an email (to this group) and on the precamp zooms.
