What’s New In 2023 At Barstow

In 2023 we have a new bundle that you’ve been asking for along with some other cool stuff to make things even better this summer.

Barstow Trailblazers- We have heard your feedback! New this year we are adding a bundle to complement our first year program.  Pathfinders will remain our 1st half of the week option for brand new Scouts to teach them the very basics.  But Trailblazers will follow that up 2nd part of the week with a fast-paced, patrol oriented immersive first year camper experience.  Highlights of the new program include a 5-mile exploratory hike, cooking 3 meals, and tons of interactive games and activities catered to younger scouts. You do not have to participate in Pathfinders to sign-up for Trailblazers and vise-versa.

Adult Striped Bass Fishing Trip – Wednesday morning leaders can sign up and pay (register early online!) for our signature Lake Murray professional guided fishing trip.  You will have to make your way to the Lake Murray marina by 6 a.m. to meet the guide to push off for several hours on the water.  The limit is a catch of 5 per person and we fully expect you to bring home the haul so we can fry them up at the Barstowree that night.

Purple Paddle Award – This year we are bringing a tradition from Camp Bob Hardin to Barstow.  This award is a cumulative competition that tracks participation and achievement throughout the week.  At the Friday night campfire one troop will be judged to be the champ for the week and win the coveted Purple Paddle.

Wednesday Night Spirit Theme – Wednesday is your chance to step out at Barstow.  Each troop is asked to come to evening retreat dressed in an original spirit theme (yes not in your field dress uniform).  After the meal troops will head down to the activity field to participate in the camp-wide Barstowree.  This mid-week competition is our patrol/troop based fun and wacky field day.  But new this year all the troops and staff will be decked out in a matching theme to bring the spirit.  Troops have complete autonomy to pick their spirit themes and swag items.

Friendship Camporee – Monday night at dusk our staff will organize a very different kind of campfire program.  Rather than the high spirited affair in the council ring – this will be a bit different event.  The location will shift to a more intimate location with nature as the backdrop.  The program will feature songs led by acoustic guitar, story telling and a solemn flag retirement ceremony.  Troops are also invited to bring desserts to share with other Scouts.
