Already 38 Scouts are signed up to come to Barstow as their 2nd week of summer camp. In addition 19 have registered as Baden Powell Scouts coming with their buddies to join our Baden Powell troop. We have hired a senior staff member to serve as the Scoutmaster of our Baden Powell troop.
It’s the beginning of May which means it’s time to make final plans for summer camp. We are still hearing from troops that are making up their minds about which summer camp to attend. The good news is we have openings! We especially have flexibility to add campers in Weeks 2-4.
With the introduction of the Barstow Bundles one question new Scouts will have is where do I go. Thanks to the efforts of Scouter Mitch Koyle we now have a new Camp Barstow map that includes the program logos. This map also updates the former “Wilderness Area” to “Muscogee Village”. If you have been to Camp Barstow many times you might also spot a new trail.
Camp Barstow is excited to welcome new Scouts BSA girl troops for weeks 3 (July 7-13) and 4 (July 14-20). We already have troops signed up for both weeks and firmly believe that with a good nucleus of new Scouts that will be a great experience for them.
This summer at Camp Barstow Scouts have 15 new merit badge bundles to choose from. Each Scout will decide which 2 they want to spend the week doing with each being a 1/2 week session. In this video the Program Director Chris McDuffie shares details on these bundles and why they make so much sense for Scouts and leaders this summer at Camp Barstow.
Our Baden Powell program is built for Scouts that perhaps can’t go to camp with their troop for some reason or want to catch-up or get ahead on advancement. We have a full-time Scoutmaster on staff for this program. So we will take whatever Scouts and adults can come and blend them in to form a troop.

Two days after Christmas many of the senior staff members on the 2019 summer camp staff gathered at the Scout office in Columbia, SC for a day of planning and collaboration. With more than 6 months before the first Scouts arrive at Camp Barstow the staff got a great head start on making plans for 2019.
In a recent video we shared that the Indian Waters Council had authorized funding to grow our fleet. With a 50,000 acre lake to play on we have discovered that a pontoon boat is an excellent craft to get Scouts and leaders out on the water.
We don’t quite have a name for her yet but please welcome the newest ship to our fleet thanks to the support our Scout Executive and Executive Board.

What is Klondike Winter Camp
The Klondike Winter Camp is held December 27-30 annually at Camp Barstow. This Winter Camp is held just after the Christmas holidays. These include many of the merit badges required for Eagle. A volunteer camp staff provides program help, guidance, and supervision in the area of Scout-craft,

Last summer some of our Camp Staff members were feeling the excitement around camp and worked to come up with a Barstow “brand”. They wanted a simple logo that could easily be recognizable and actually turned into a hot iron brand like Scouts see at Philmont. With the generational gap between the Gen X camp leadership and these earnest youth I’m not sure we all agreed on what the new design should look like.
One of the questions we have received since rolling out the new program is an obvious one. “What if a Scout already has one of the merit badges?”

As we are getting out and conducting camp promotions inevitably this is a question that an older Scout or Scoutmaster will ask. Sounds like a great idea for a website post to share with you the answer!
In previous years our high adventure program consisted of week long trips that took a Scout off camp for the better part of their time at Barstow.
Since August of 1953 Camp Barstow has hosted a small herd of Bull Moose because urbanization of their natural habitat was threatening the population. The herd has survived through the move from the old camp in Gaston, SC and now enjoys the lush vegetation on the banks of Lake Murray. In 1957 the Royal Order of the Bull Moose was formed in order to help protect and nourish the herd of Bull Moose.
One of the most popular questions that we have been asked since returning from Florida is to share more details on the merit badge bundles at Camp Barstow. Essentially when your Scouts come to Barstow in 2019 they have two simple decisions to make. What am I going to do the first 1/2 of the week?
