Fun After 4 Is Our Secret Sauce.
Scoutmaster Jim Rogers of Troop 2870 said it best. On the video below he said Barstow was the first camp he’s ever attended that looked and felt like a true summer camp. What did he mean by that? He meant it was not a merit badge mill having the Scouts chase down easy elective merit badges until the sun went down.
Scout Leader Fun #BetterAtBarstow
We’ve shown you how Camp Barstow is a modern camp with great facilities, has a new way of doing program and a great staff. Here is another reason why things are #BetterAtBarstow.
Reason #5 Scout Leader Fun
Why should the Scouts be the only ones having fun at camp?
Camp Barstow has been blessed over the last decade with a dedicated volunteer corps of adults that spend one Saturday each month working on building projects. During these years they have totally transformed the infrastructure of camp with Adirondacks in every campsite. This year their focus is on building a large Adirondack in Edisto Campsite (Site #7) making it our “super site”

Camp Barstow offers a unique merit badge program with fun activities and amazing Scout spirit. Here is another reason why things are #BetterAtBarstow.
Reason #4 Our Modern Camp Facilities
It’s nostalgic to take your Scouts to a camp that looked like the one that you remember with green wall tents and pit toilets in the campsites.
We cannot thank you – our volunteer leaders – enough for the amazing time and resources you provide to make Scouting possible here in the Midlands! However, we invite you to come by and kick back and enjoy some Barbecue and Bluegrass in appreciation for all that you do!
Putting The Fun Back In Scout Camp
You’ve heard about one reason things are #BetterAtBarstow with our merit badge bundles. Here is our secret sauce.
Reason #2 Fun After 4 PM.
After Scouts have been in class all day the last thing they want to do is take Finger Printing Merit Badge at 8 o’clock at night!
Why Are We Saying It’s #BetterAtBarstow
As your troop considers where to go to summer camp in 2020 you have an excellent choice close to home. I never liked the argument that an Indian Waters Council troop should pick Barstow because it’s “your camp.” Camp Barstow should earn your loyalty.
The concept of teaching complimentary merit badges bundled together over 2 1/2 days is a whole new way of running program at a Scouts BSA camp. Some leaders questioned if this would work or what kind of experience their scouts would have. So at the end of their week at Barstow Scout leaders went on tape to share their feedback and explain why they thought it was so successful.
Scout leaders you may have heard we have an air conditioned Scoutmaster lounge with WiFi. But have you heard about all the fun activities that we schedule and staff for you during the week? And no I’m not talking about campsite inspections either! This video will give you a look at some of the ways our leaders get to be kids again during their week at Camp Barstow.
During your week at camp Scout leaders may sign up for Mr. Sifford’s class on Dutch Oven cooking. We promise you will learn a few new tricks from the old Jedi master of the cast iron pot. But the best part is the cook off where the leaders cook up their best recipes and the judges are forced to try multiple dishes to come up with the champion.
How many camps can say their dining hall is a program area? At Camp Barstow our Scout spirit is off the charts and this rendition of an old Scout classic by Kendall is just a taste of what your Scouts will experience during their week at camp.
Two of our popular merit badge bundle programs at Camp Barstow are focused on shooting sports. In Barstow Marksman Scouts learn Rifle Shooting and Shotgun Shooting merit badges over 2 1/2 days of their week of camp. Archery and tomahawk throwing are part of our Barstow Frontiersman program that also includes Indian Lore and some handicraft merit badges.
During the week at Camp Barstow the adults get to have fun too! The Scoutmaster Canoe Sink is one of the competitions that are volunteer leaders get to enjoy. As you can see in this video the rules break down pretty quickly as the big kids go for the win. During the week we also have special times where we do adults only shotgun shooting,
At 4 PM class is over and we staff open program areas all over Camp Barstow. Tubing was our #1 new addition last summer and you can believe we will be expanding this thrilling free time activity on our beautiful Lake Murray. Registration is open for 2020 and a $100 deposit holds your troop’s spot.
BBQ and Bluegrass music – how can you miss that!? The Indian Waters Council invites all Scouting parents and leaders to come out for a night of free food and entertainment on October 23 from 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM. During the event we will preview the 2020 program at Camp Barstow.
Last summer we rolled out a completely new way of doing merit badge instruction at Scout camp. At most camps Scouts create a schedule of classes that has them bouncing around every hour to different program areas where they show up late and beg the counselor to let them go a few minutes early.
Things are #BetterAtBarstow in 2020. We are building on the success and rave reviews from our innovative merit badge bundle program. By expanding the program to include 59 merit badges grouped into 24 different bundles we have added a lot of variety to your choices. At Camp Barstow in 2020 Scouts can typically earn 6 merit badges by combining their pair of 1/2 week bundles to build a schedule.
All it takes to hold your troop’s spot at Camp Barstow in 2020 is a simple $100 deposit. This deposit is will then go towards your overall fees but puts your name down and allows you to indicate a campsite preference. In the simple registration process we just need to get an idea of how many youth/adults you expect to bring so we can make sure that any particular week doesn’t get too full.
Monday nights at Camp Barstow you are invited to come visit Leech’s Mercantile up on the Rifle Range and take part in our brand new program – Cowboy Action Shooting. Thanks to the hard work of our Indian Waters Council Shooting Sports Committee led by David Leech we are now offering this exciting program at camp.
